What generator diesel fuel supply services do we offer?
If your business continuity depends on a generator, having a reliable supply of diesel fuel is an essential part of your operational planning. Here’s how we can help:
Regular on-site delivery of generator diesel fuel
Ideal for businesses with backup generators that need to maintain a recurring fuel reserve.
- How does it work? The customer schedules deliveries with their account representative. The frequency and minimum order are determined based on tank capacity, average consumption, and the facility’s needs. Each delivery includes a detailed invoice and a record of the gallons delivered.
- Key benefit. Our in-house fleet and direct coordination with an account representative make it easy to plan and track deliveries.

→ Schedule your recurring delivery
Diesel Storage Tank Rental
For companies that do not have their own storage tank or whose current capacity might not be sufficient during a prolonged emergency.
- Available capacities. Available options include 500-, 4,900-, and 6,000-gallon tanks. We also offer a 6,000-gallon ISO tank equipped with a meter, pump, and nozzle to supply fuel directly to equipment or vehicles from the customer’s premises.
- Setup time. The equipment may require approximately two weeks of preparation. Availability varies, so it is recommended to coordinate this in advance, especially before hurricane season, from June through November.
- Technical considerations. The pump requires a 220-volt connection. Containment dikes are not included but can be reserved. The final configuration must be evaluated based on site conditions and applicable requirements.
Emergency diesel fuel delivery for electric generators within 36 hours
This service is intended for active customers who need to coordinate fuel deliveries during hurricanes, power outages, or other emergencies.
- Process. The order must be placed at least 36 hours before the requested delivery date by contacting your account representative directly.
- Important requirement. To be considered active, the account must have at least one delivery on record within the last year. Inactive accounts may not receive priority during periods of high demand.
- Coverage. We coordinate deliveries in all 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico, subject to availability, road access conditions, routes, and logistical coordination during the emergency.

→ Verify that your account is active
Tanker Truck Rental for In-House Distribution
For companies with multiple consumption points or projects in remote locations that prefer to manage their own fuel distribution.
- Capacities. Trucks ranging from 900 to 6,000 gallons, subject to availability and coordination based on the project.
- Important. The rental does not include a driver or insurance policy. The customer must provide the appropriate insurance and comply with the applicable requirements for operating the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions About Diesel Fuel for Electric Generators in Puerto Rico
What type of diesel fuel does an electric generator need?
Modern generators require ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) with a maximum of 15 ppm sulfur, a mandatory standard in the U.S. for on-road vehicles since 2006, non-road vehicles since 2010, and locomotives/marine applications since 2012, according to regulatory fuel standards. It protects aftertreatment systems such as DPF and SCR and is the only type distributed by American Petroleum.
How much diesel does an electric generator consume per hour?
| Generator Power | Consumption at 50% Load | Consumption at 75% Load | Consumption at 100% Load |
| 20 kW | 0.7 gal/h | 1.1 gal/h | 1.4 gal/h |
| 50 kW | 1.8 gal/h | 2.6 gal/h | 3.5 gal/h |
| 100 kW | 3.5 gal/h | 5.0 gal/h | 7.0 gal/h |
| 200 kW | 7.0 gal/h | 10.0 gal/h | 14.0 gal/h |
| 500 kW | 17.5 gal/h | 25.0 gal/h | 35.0 gal/h |
Note: Reference values based on manufacturers’ averages; consult the generator’s technical specifications for an exact calculation.
How often should the diesel in a generator’s tank be replenished?
It depends on consumption, as well as the tank’s capacity, temperature, water content, condition, and turnover. Example: A 100 kW generator with a 250-gallon tank operating at 75% load has an approximate runtime of 50 hours. Keep the tank level above 50% and schedule recurring deliveries. Stored diesel degrades within 6 to 12 months without additives, according to ASTM standards and industry practices.
Does American Petroleum deliver diesel for electric generators throughout Puerto Rico?
Yes, with our own fleet based in Toa Baja and Ponce, covering all 78 municipalities in Puerto Rico. We coordinate directly with account representatives regarding routes and access, even in adverse weather conditions.
How long does an emergency diesel delivery take?
Plan for a minimum of 36 hours’ notice for active customers. During hurricanes or widespread power outages, delivery times may be longer; priority is given only to active accounts with at least one delivery in the past year.
What is the difference between ULSD diesel and conventional diesel?
ULSD contains <15 ppm of sulfur, compared to 500 ppm in conventional diesel. It complies with EPA regulations and protects SCR/DPF systems. Using conventional diesel could void the warranty and cause premature failures if not specified in the manufacturer’s instructions.
Can I store diesel for emergencies without special requirements?
Yes, provided NFPA 30 standards are met; however, tanks larger than 660 gallons may require containment dikes, and underground tanks require registration and monitoring. American Petroleum provides guidance on requirements and rents out certified equipment.
